How do I become a registered CFAA technician?
- To become a registered CFAA technician you must:
– Complete the 5-course technician training program
– Register as a trainee
– Pass a written and a practical exam with a grade of 80% or higher

How long does it take to become a registered CFAA technician?
- It depends on how quickly you complete the courses in the technician training program, and whether you qualify for course exemptions. With no course exemptions, we have had students complete all five courses in as little as six months! On average, students take 1.5 – 2 years of part-time study to finish the program.
Where can I take the CFAA fire alarm technician courses?
- Courses 1, 3, 4, and 5 are available through CFAA as online self-directed classes. All courses or their equivalents are also offered at our community and private career college education partners across the country.

How do I renew my registration if it has been expired for 3 years or longer?
- To reinstate your registration, you must complete Course 5 of the technician training program, pass the theory and practical exams, and pay a $200 reinstatement fee. To complete Course 5, you may take the entire course or challenge the final exam.
What are the prerequisites to take the Registration Theory and Practical Exams?
- To qualify to take the theory exam, you must:
– successfully complete the five courses in the technician’s training program, or be approved for the applicable exemptions
– register with CFAA as a trainee - To qualify to take the practical exam, you must:
– have done all of the above
– achieve a minimum 80% grade on the theory exam
Where can I take the registration theory exam?
- The theory exam is a proctored 2.5-hour online multiple choice exam.

Where can I take the registration practical exam?
- The practical exam can be conducted in-person or as a live virtual exam. For in-person exams, there are a number of approved test site locations across Canada. We offer these tests in conjunction with our community and private career college education partners, and we also have a test site at our CFAA office in Markham, Ontario.

What do we do in the practical exam?
- The practical exam is a 2.5-3 hour hands-on test, one-on-one with an invigilator to test your skills related to verification, inspection, and testing of fire alarm systems.
How do I register for the theory or practical exams?

What do I need to renew my technician’s registration?
- You must complete continuing education training to earn credits to fulfill the requirements for renewal (8 credits for 1-year renewal, 16 credits for 2-year renewal).
